With a vote on Jan. 18 by McIntosh County School Board members Galin Hulett, Fred McIver and Missy Brigman, Dr. John Barge’s contract as Superintendent of Schools is extended for two more years.

Upon opening the regular meeting, the board went into executive session for more than an hour and returned to open session.

The matter of personnel was addressed first.

Hulett stated: “I move that we extend the current contract of Dr. John Barge, Superintendent of Schools, for two years.”

Those attending the meeting clapped.

Board Chairman Brigman called for a second and McIver made the second to the motion.

“All those in favor?” Brigman asked.

Hulett, McIver and Brigman raised their hands. Board members James McKinzie had his left hand at his mouth and looked down and Sandy McDonald looked at the three board members, who raised their hands in affirmation of the vote.

Brigman said, “Motion is carried 3 to 2.”

Dr. Barge said, “Thank you.”

Then, McKinzie said, “Before we move forward, I just want to say this board is going to work with Dr. Barge…support Dr. Barge. We are all coming together and, uh, we have some differences of opinion, but there is no–It is not as serious as I believe what everyone out here believes it is. Uh, so, ya’ll give us a chance to start the healing process and we are going to move forward and do what is right for our school district.”

McDonald added, “Yes, we are.”
