Donald James Benz, 81 years of age, passed on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Don was born December 17, 1937 in Buffalo, New York. In 1961 Don graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. After graduation, he completed Officer Candidate School and became an Ensign in the Navy before serving 18 months in the Philippines. Don and Mary “Jeannette” were married on August 31, 1963 in Central, South Carolina and moved to Newport, Rhode Island to complete his Navy service. They then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Don had a successful career in architecture for 37 years, retiring from TVS in 2002.
After retirement Don and Jeanette moved to Darien, Georgia for a marsh lifestyle and peace they had been seeking. Don was an active volunteer at Darien United Methodist Church, the McIntosh Art Association, and served as the President of the Friends of Sapelo for 6 years.
Don will be forever be remembered as a loyal husband, protector of nature, genuine friend to all, seeker of knowledge and a grandfather who elaborately concocted treasure hunts with burnt edge parchment and wooden treasure boxes in the woods to stimulate pirate treasure for his grandkids. While we are confident, he has just made heaven a better place, he will be missed tremendously by those who knew and loved him on earth.
Don leaves a wonderful long-lasting memory to his wife of 56 years Jeannette, his son Arthur (Laura), grandchildren Collier, Ridley, Keaton and Rhodes; brother Dennis (Mary-Ann) and his numerous friends.
