John Ancil Strickland

John Ancil Strickland, age 70, went to be with The Lord on May 22, 2021 at his home surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Screven, GA and grew up in Trudie, Brantley County. He moved to Darien, GA in his late teens. He was a resident of Darien, GA for 53 years. He learned butchering from Pete Carter, while working at Butler’s IGA. He became a master butcher by trade. He then went to work at Bluestein’s Supermarket in his early twenties and made many life-long friends. Upon the closing of Bluestein’s in 2000, he opened his own butchering shop at his home where he processed venison. He was known for his venison and pork sausage from Juneau, Alaska to Lake Okeechobee, FL, to Boston, Massachusetts. Upon the closing of his processing shop, he enjoyed tinkering around the house. His favorite leisure activity was fishing with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilford “Bud” and Myrtice Strickland; his son, Kevin Ray Strickland; a sister, Barbara Wright; three brothers, Jo Bud Strickland, Jerry Strickland, and James Henry Strickland.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Debbie Strickland; his children, John G. Strickland (Jeanie) of Darien, Michelle L. Perkins (Doug) of Hortense, Selena Strickland (Albie) of Darien, and James Strickland (Amanda) of Darien; a very special aunt, Hazel Rogers; two sisters, Shirley Duggan of Trudie and Marylee Oliver (John) of Hortense; and a brother, Robert Strickland (Bert) of Darien. He has 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He has two special adopted brothers, Julius Shaw (Caroline) of Darien and Pat Howard (Susan) of Jesup; three brothers-in-law, Johnny Harrison (Kim) of Darien, Charles Harrison (Wendy) of Darien, and Derek Harrison (Dallas) of Glennville.

Visitation services will be held at Darien Funeral Home in Darien, GA on Monday, May 24, 2021, with family visitation at 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. and then the family will receive visitors 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Darien, GA ,with Rev. Tommy Whaley and Rev. Freddie Shaw officiating.

Active pallbearers are his grandsons, Kevin Perkins, Travis Perkins, Josh Hatton, David Perkins, Michael Moore, Chris Hatton, and C.J. Strickland.

Honorary pallbearers are Brody Wimberly, AC and Sue Deloach, along with the members of the Eastside Hunting and Fishing Club, Cole and Seth Maxwell, Lee Foskey and Jimbo Kelly, along with the members of the Ft. Barrington Hunting and Fishing Club, Matt Coulliette, David Bluestein, Ronnie Howard, Greg Amerson, Larry Horn, Tony Hall, Bruce Kennedy, Bobby Dicks, Craig Parker, Charlie Mitchell, Laurie Luteran (Lewis Cancer Center Nurse Navigator), Dr. Christopher Haberman and Ginger Cain (nurse), Dr. Mark Taylor and the chemo room nurses at Summit Cancer Center, and Dr. Michael Hesselle and the nurses of Anderson Cancer Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in honor of his name to one of the three cancer centers in Savannah, GA that John was a patient of, Lewis Cancer Center, Summit Cancer Center, or Anderson Cancer Center.
