Marion Hawthorne

Marion O. “Juggy” Hawthorne, 86, of Darien, passed away on Thursday, September 8 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia.

Marion was a native of McIntosh County, Georgia born to H.O. “Remy” and Annie M. Hawthorne. He served in the U.S. Navy for 16 years before moving back to McIntosh County. He married Naomi Z. Williams in November of 1977 and they were married until he preceded her in death by one day. He joined Naomi in the operation of The Darien Restaurant and The Darien Motel and later retired as the Manager of Public Works for the City of Darien.

Marion was a member of the Lion’s Club, attended both United Methodist and Northside Baptist churches and enjoyed crabbing, picking up and shelling pecans, collecting coins, eating (almost anything, except for bread), and watching sports, especially the Atlanta Braves.

Marion is survived by his daughter, Kelly (Steven) Russell, his step-children, Bill (Robin) Williams, Diane (Ricky) Bennett and Patricia (Mike) Merritt; three grandsons, four granddaughters, and two great-grandsons. He is also survived by a sister, Annette “Peewee” Stevenson of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Robert and Jimmie Hawthorne, as well as his niece Beth Hawthorne and step-daughter, Mary Williams.

A combined memorial and celebration of life for Marion and Naomi Hawthorne will be held at Northside Baptist on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. Family and friends will be invited to speak and share memories and stories if they wish.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to niece Jeanie Lee, caregivers Lori Poppell and Nicole Skeen, and to all those who assisted in caring for Marion and Naomi these past few months.
