His family and The Low Country Crematory announce the death of Hershel Coleman McLeod, age 90, who passed away on Sunday, March 12, at Southeast Georgia Health System, after a short illness.
Hershel (Mac) McLeod was born on September 26, 1932, in Baker County, Georgia, to William Noah and Elizabeth Norman McLeod. He was the middle of 9 children. At age 20, he left home to various employments, which led him to Sylvester, Georgia. There he married Mary Kate Flowers in 1957 and began a job as file clerk with the Bank of Worth County until 1962. He then took a job with a new bank in Hazlehurst for 4 years, then moved on to Peoples State Bank in Baxley in 1966, where he became CEO for 19 years. He had advanced from file clerk to CEO in less than 10 years. After transferring to Southeastern Bank in Folkston, he retired in1992 and moved to Darien. Mr. Mac considered his career in banking one of guidance and blessing from God. In his early retirement, he was employed as a McIntosh County Tax Assessor. Fishing, crabbing and camping were favorite pastimes. He took great enjoyment in gardening and growing fruit trees to share their bounty with family and friends.
Mr. McLeod is preceded in death by his parents William Noah and Elizabeth McLeod; siblings, Lucille Hopkins, Evelyn Mock, Thomas McLeod, John McLeod, Christine Glaze; son, Michael Coleman McLeod. Surviving: wife of 66 years, Mary Kate Flowers McLeod; daughter, Beth McLeod; daughter-in-law, Joy Gore (Michael) McLeod; grandson, Coleman Parker McLeod; grandaughter, Katie Lanelle Campbell (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Jameson, Porter, Tobias; friend, Ronny Degrilla.
Mr. McLeod was a member of Glory Worship Center and active in the weekly men’s prayer group.
His memorial service will be held on Monday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Glory Worship Center, Hwy. 99 in Darien GA. Reverends Lee Brandt, Andy Amason and Butch Ginn will preside.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Glory Worship Center.
