Lucy Lea Sellers

Lucy Lea Sellers

Lucy Kendrick Lea Sellers, 78, of Sapelo Island, departed this life Saturday, May 13, 2023, in McIntosh County.

Born December 14, 1944, in Water Valley, Mississippi, to Fred and Mary Quinn Kendrick, she was a graduate of Water Valley High School’s class of 1962 and attended the University of Mississippi.

Mrs. Sellers had been a resident of McIntosh County since 1993. She worked at the Darien News as a photographer, writer, and in advertising sales over the course of many years. “Lucy did it all and was quite capable of doing whatever we asked of her,” according to her longtime friend Kathleen Russell, owner and Publisher of the Darien News. Lucy was a realtor with Coastal Properties, and attended First African Baptist Church and was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed photography, gardening, birding, long walks on the beach and fishing, which was an obsession when the trout were biting.  Lucy’s spirit was filled with kindness, gentleness and love for all of God’s creation and she reflected His love through her words, photography and actions.  She had a special love for the people of McIntosh County, particularly for those who live on Sapelo Island where she shared so much of her life.

Survivors include her husband of 15 years, Mike Sellers of Sapelo Island; children, Nathaniel Wilson Lea, IV (Cornelia) of Little Rock, AR, and Walker Pickett Lea, Sr. (Lindsay) of Oldsmar, FL; and stepson, Ike Sellers (Kendra) of Sapelo Island; eight grandchildren, Lucy Isabelle Lea, Taylor Kendrick Lea, Walker Pickett Lea, Jr., Makenna Avery Lea, Brynnan Piper Lea, Tallula Aspen Lea, Elijah Sellers, and Finley Sellers; three sisters, Mary Anne Welch of Madison, MS, Emily Rardin of West Point, MS, and Robena Hussman (Walter) of Little Rock, AR; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Mary and Fred Kendrick.
