Richard F. Sanders
Richard Sanders, 88, beloved husband of Ona C. Sanders, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023 at the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia.
He moved to McIntosh County 18 months ago and they became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Darien. Prior to moving to Darien, they lived 24 years in Lakemont, GA. During his time in Rabun County, he was an active member of the Wiley Presbyterian Church, a faithful volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels, and an avid gardener. As a retired union carpenter from Local #211 of Western Pennsylvania, there was nothing that he couldn’t make. He enjoyed many hours in his workshop or garden.
Prior to Rabun County, he lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was born and raised. He was an active member of Wexford Community Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder. He and Ona served 2 ½ years as mission volunteers with the Presbyterian Church, where they served in Sitka, Alaska and Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC. They traveled extensively visiting square dancing clubs throughout the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer S. and Ruth M. Sanders; sister, Eileen Wigton; and brother, Elmer (Jack) Sanders.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 69 years, Ona C. Sanders; his children, Susan Kriznik of Pittsburgh, PA; Kenneth and Deborah Sanders of Vallejo, CA; Margaret (Peg) and Larry Loar of Pittsburgh, PA; and Elizabeth (Betsy) and Jeffrey Cummins of Darien, GA; ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
