Man dies from dog attack, woman severely injured;

Sheriff’s Office continues investigation

The following is a news release issued by the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office at 3:07 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

“In the early morning hours of November 3, 2025, an animal attack in McIntosh County ultimately led to the loss of life of an elderly man.

“McIntosh County deputies and Emergency Services were dispatched to a resident located at 1134 Winnie Davis Court in Townsend. The caller reported that she and an adult male were actively being attacked by two dogs within their residence.

“Upon arrival, deputies and medical staff discovered a deceased male and a severely injured female, both located upstairs in the residence. The injured female was provided life saving measures before being transported to the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick for emergency medical treatment.

“The scene was secured accordingly. McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigators began processing the scene for evidence. Several interviews have been conducted, including a neighborhood canvas, as part of the ongoing investigation.

“McIntosh County Animal Control responded to the scene as well. Both aggressive animals were safely secured by animal control officers, from within the residence. Ultimately, both animals were euthanized off site by qualified staff.

“The deceased has been identified as Walter Anthony Sterno, 78, originally from Richmond Hill, Georgia.

“There is no threat to the public. Investigators are working diligently to determine the events that led to this tragic incident. The Atlantic Judicial District Attorney’s Office is assisting to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.

“The Sheriff’s Office is working with other county agencies to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. Sheriff Thornell “T.K.” King extends his deepest condolences to the family of Walter Sterno and offers prayers for the rapid recovery of the injured female.”
