Terry L. Harrington

Terry Lamar Harrington

Terry Lamar Harrington, 85, of Townsend and Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026. He was born on July 29, 1940, to Clarence Milton Harrington and Iva Lee Sweat of Alma, Georgia.

As a boy, Terry spent his days in the countryside—fishing the creeks, hunting quail with his dogs, and even searching for the long-whispered “fortune of buried money,” hidden by one of his ancestors on family land. Those early adventures sparked a lifelong connection to the natural world, one that would quietly shape the way he moved through the world for the rest of his life.

Terry attended Bacon County High School, where he played football for the Red Raiders and, after an injury, found his voice narrating the team’s sportscast. He later went on to the University of Georgia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. It was there that he met his college sweetheart, Caroline Cannon. They married and built a life together, raising two devoted daughters who loved him dearly. Terry continued his education at Appalachian State University, where he earned his master’s degree and began the path that would define his professional life.

He went on to serve as an Associate Professor of Biology and Microbiology at South Georgia College in Douglas, Georgia. His love of the outdoors shaped not only what he taught, but how he taught it—often bringing the subject to life in a way that extended beyond the classroom. Known for his depth of knowledge, quiet curiosity, and steady presence, Terry left a lasting impression on generations of students, many of whom carried his lessons with them long after they left his class.

Outside of his work, Terry’s connection to the natural world remained a constant source of joy. He was especially fond of fly fishing in the rivers of North Georgia; drawn to the patience and rhythm it required. He enjoyed sailing—from the open waters of St. Maarten to the familiar shores of Lake Chatuge—and was happiest simply being near the water. An avid birdwatcher, he was rarely without his Sibley guide and binoculars and never failed to pause for the sight of an eagle overhead. He was also active in local car clubs and could often be seen around town in his cherished 1952 Carolina blue MGTD, a car he took pride in. He had a special affection for his dog, Hammer—“Hammeruski”—a loyal and constant companion.

In retirement, Terry and Caroline split their time between homes in Darien and Hiawassee, Georgia. In both places, he formed deep friendships and found a lasting sense of community, along with fellowship and faith at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Terry was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Cannon, and his brother, Jim Harrington. He is survived by his two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Harrington and Julia Stewart Harrington; his sister, Joan Griffith; his niece, Elizabeth Harrington; his nephew, Matthew Harrington; and his aunt, Jo Earl Ellis.

Terry will be remembered for his steady presence, his curious mind, and his enduring love of the natural world—and by those closest to him with a simple, familiar farewell: “Boi.”

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the Hospice of the Golden Isles for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
