Ora Gail Phillips
Ora “Gail” Phillips
Our beloved Ora “Gail” Phillips passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at the age of 69, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Jesup, Georgia, Gail spent many of her childhood weekends and summers at her grandparents’ fishing cabin on the Sapelo River in McIntosh County. It was there that her lifelong love of the coast, the water, and the surrounding marshland began. She cherished time spent water skiing, boating, shrimping, and fishing with her siblings.
At the age of 12, Gail moved to McIntosh County, where she would remain for the rest of her life, always living close to the marsh she loved. She graduated from Oglethorpe Academy in 1974 and went on to attend Armstrong State College, earning a degree in Business Administration & Education.
Gail was known for her strong work ethic and her ability to adapt to many roles over the years. Her career included work at a veterinary office, teaching continuing education business classes, running a pharmacy, managing a restaurant, and later serving as a bookkeeper at a seafood company until her retirement. She was never one to sit idle.
Deeply devoted to her community, Gail was a longtime member of Friends of Sapelo, where she served as treasurer for many years. She dedicated countless hours volunteering on Sapelo Island and played a vital role in introducing many others to the organization. Gail took great joy in sharing the island’s unique natural beauty and rich history with others.
Gail was also a talented seamstress, an avid gardener, and an enthusiastic boater. She was well known for her resourcefulness, her love of thrift finds, and her practical, thoughtful approach to life.
Fiercely independent by nature, Gail remained true to herself even in her final days, often expressing her desire not to “make a fuss.” As one friend fondly remarked, “We’re certain she is in the afterlife, insisting she doesn’t need a cloud—she’ll simply sit on the edge of someone else’s to save space.”
Gail is survived by her brother, Charles “Charlie” Phillips and his partner, Melissa Kriest; her sister, Susan Phillips, and her husband, Steve Branham; and her extended family, including her late husband’s loved ones, the Glenn family, who embraced Gail as one of their own. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve Glenn, as well as her parents, Myron “Mike” Phillips and Maxine Wheeler.
A celebration of life for Gail will be held from 2-4 p.m. on June 27th at The Fish Dock Restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Sapelo.
