Stephen Mark Dwelley, cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on July 30, 2026, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. Born on June 11, 1957, in Saginaw, Michigan, Steve was the beloved son of Hugh and Ruth Dwelley. He was 69 years old.
Steve was a man of strength and resilience, qualities he displayed throughout his life and especially during his illness. His enduring spirit and bravery were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
He was predeceased by his loving parents, Hugh and Ruth Dwelley; his cherished wife, Brigitte Dwelley; and his great-great-nephew, Kayden Wesley, whose memory he held dear.
Like his mother, Ruth, Steve was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Darien, Georgia, where he sang in the choir and helped with the youth ministry. Steve was also a member of the Christian Men Fellowship, where he worked as a carpenter, building handicap ramps for disabled individuals in the surrounding communities.
He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1978 to 1992. During his military career, Steve served on active duty in the Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. His service left an indelible mark on those who served alongside him and on the many lives he touched throughout his military career.
Family was central to Steve’s life. He is survived by his devoted sister, Rise’ Jane Hart and her husband, Thomas, of Catlett, Virginia. He was a beloved uncle to his nieces, Kaylene Farmer and her husband, Joe, of Greenwood, Wisconsin, and Alexis Russell of Warrenton, Virginia. His great-niece, Kristian; great-nephews, Brandon, Joseph, and Jordan; great-great-nieces, Elizabeth, Catherine, Addelina, and Cheyenne; and great-great-nephew, Jerry IV, will forever cherish the memories of their dear Uncle Steve, whose kindness and warmth were constants in their lives.
Steve’s memory will be honored in a service on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 310 Greene Street, Vernon Square, Darien, GA 31305. Family and friends will gather to celebrate a life well lived and a man deeply loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting Steve’s generous spirit and his desire to help others.
As we say goodbye to Steve, we remember him for his laughter, his wisdom, and his extraordinary ability to make those around him feel valued and loved. Though he has left us, his legacy of courage, love, and service will remain in our hearts forever.
