Harriet May Hancock Roberson
On the afternoon of Monday, May 18, 2026, Harriet May Hancock Roberson, 96, left this world surrounded by those who loved her.
Harriet was born in Richmond, VA, October 13, 1929, to Lee Tyler Hancock and Isabel Hammond Hancock. She lived there with her family for ten years before moving to Wilmington, NC, and then Brunswick, GA, in January 1942. She attended Glynn Academy graduating in 1946. After high school, Harriet was sent to West Virginia to attend Fairmont State College graduating in 1950 with a teaching certificate.
She returned to Georgia to teach high school in Woodbine, GA, for two years. It was during that time she met Ralph “Bugs” Roberson. They were married for 47 years until Bugs’ death in 1998. Harriet was a homemaker and involved in several civic organizations; notably Junior Women’s Club. She served as president and was selected as Young Woman of the Year for the state of Georgia in 1968. She was also involved in and president of Koinania; an interfaith group. She was a member and president of Coastal Georgia Audubon Society, Lower Altamaha Historical Society and League of Women Voters.
While in Brunswick Harriet was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. In 1967, she took on the duty of parish secretary, retaining that job until 1983. During her time at St. Mark’s, she was also a Sunday school teacher, president of the Episcopal Church Women, adult youth advisor and treasurer for the vestry. After retiring from her secretarial duties at St Mark’s, Harriet and her husband purchased a river home in McIntosh County, where she became an avid fisherman. After her husband died, she returned to Brunswick to be closer to her grandchildren.
During her time in McIntosh, Harriet became a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She was active in parish life as a school tutor in the program they offered, a member of the ECW and the choir until age 94.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as her son Lee Ammons Roberson; brother, William Tyler Hancock; and sister, Isabel Hancock Tyler.
She is survived by her children, Laura McIntosh (Gary), Kay Brown (Hugh), Tyler Roberson (Billy Jefferson); grandchildren, Kristal Kenner (Jared), Wil Brown and Waverly Brown; great-grandchildren, Jaxon Kenner and Karson Kenner; brother, James Hancock; and several nieces and nephews.
Affectionately known as Granny and Nana to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their friends was loved by all. She lived her life with passion and compassion. During her time on this earth, she was a great daughter, sister, wife and mother, friend, Christian, mentor, advocate, teacher and matriarch. Although her earthly presence will be missed, the lessons she taught will always remain and the love she gave will be forever in the hearts of those she touched.
Her service will take place Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Darien at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, with retired Rev. Francis T. Daunt and Rev. Ted Clarkson to officiate.
