George J. “Bubba” Deverger Jr.

George J. “Bubba” Deverger Jr. passed away peacefully and became present with the Lord on August 5th, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones.  A Blessed man, a true servant, and a witness to Christ, he spent a lifetime working for others in the vegetable garden, on the fire engine, and as a County Commissioner.

He is survived by his caring wife of 38 years, Sheila Deverger; his son John Russell Deverger and wife Amanda of Darien Ga; his daughters, Heather Keck of Birmingham AL, and Heidi Keck of Darien, Ga.; grandchildren, Ethan Duncan and Kate Duncan of Birmingham, AL; his brother, Bruce Deverger Sr. of Meridian, Ga.; and nephew, Bruce Deverger Jr. of Meridian Ga.; nieces, Jonetta McDonald and Katrina Chapman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and JoAnn Deverger; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Deverger and Mr. and Mrs. J.O Thompson.

“Bubba” was a 46-year decorated firefighter and EMT, serving 39 years at U.S. Naval Sub Base Kings Bay, and beginning his career with the McIntosh County Fire Department and the Glynn County Fire Department.  He served for four terms as a County Commissioner, helping bring new jobs and development, and taking care of rural citizens and their tax dollars.

“Bubba” was a lifelong farmer, as a boy he learned vegetables, tractors, and how to give from his maternal Grandfather, J.O Thompson, “P.O.”, supplying both grocery stores in town with Mr. Claude McGahee and Mr. Quincy Vickers.  A true sportsman and houndsman, his best days were on flood tides catching big redfish or at the hunting club with his family and friends running deer.  As a County Commissioner, he was instrumental in bringing the Magnolia Bluff Outlet Mall to Darien, pushed to maintain the old Butler River Bridge as a recreational fishing opportunity for citizens, and always took pride in helping rural citizens have equipment to maintain their roads and driveways, working alongside his dear friend Ronnie Young. At Kings Bay, he would meet and marry the love of his life, Sheila, and make many lifelong friends, Brothers, and Sons out of the Firemen and Navy Service Members he worked with.

“Bubba” was a selfless family man and a true giver, he enjoyed fine horses and the cowboy life, helping kids make their first hunting memories in the woods, giving vegetables away to show his love, and making lifelong friends out of strangers.
