Live High Explosive mortar discovered at
Butler Island, Ft. Stewart coming to diffuse
At 2:56 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, Georgia DNR Game Management officers were cleaning up around the small dock area on the south side of the Butler River Bridge on Butler Island, when they spied a live high explosive mortar laying in the grass area.
McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office, McIntosh EMA, McIntosh Volunteer Fire Department and McIntosh EMS responded, and Fort Stewart’s bomb squad was called in to diffuse the bomb.
The Sheriff’s Office cordoned off a 440’ area to protect from the blast by 3:30 p.m.
Several years ago, another live bomb was also located in the same area.
