Two I-95 accidents stop traffic;

one unidentified man loses life

Two traffic accidents occurred during the night of Oct. 4-5, which stopped traffic on the expressway, snarled traffic through McIntosh County and one unidentified driver was killed.

Georgia State Patrol provided the following information on Monday afternoon:

On Oct. 4, at 11:14 p.m., a Trooper was dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on I-95 SB at MM 47 in McIntosh County. The crash involved two commercial motor vehicles (CMV) with reported injuries. The crash investigation revealed that one CMV was parked on the right shoulder of I-95 SB. The other involved CMV was traveling south on I-95 and failed to maintain its lane of travel. The front of that CMV struck the rear of the parked CMV.

Due to the impact, the at-fault CMV overturned onto its side. The attached trailer of the at-fault CMV was hauling a corrosive and hazardous material. The non-at-fault CMV driver was injured and transported to SEGHS-Brunswick. SCRT/I responded to assist. Due to the corrosive material, all of I-95 SB was closed until roughly 8:15 a.m. on Oct 5. I-95 NB was completely closed until 6:26 a.m., due to cleanup and debris removal.

Multiple units from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office, the Glynn County Police Department, McIntosh County Fire Department and Glynn County Fire Department responded and were used to re-route vehicle traffic onto Exit 49 SB and exit 42 NB.

On Oct. 5 at 6:09 a.m., a Trooper was enroute to assist another Trooper with traffic control from an earlier vehicle crash on I-95 SB near MM 47 in McIntosh County. While enroute to assist, the Trooper overheard radio traffic from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office of another vehicle crash on I-95 SB at MM 52 in McIntosh County. The radio traffic advised the crash involved a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and a sedan that reportedly drove into the back of the CMV.

Shortly thereafter, the Trooper arrived on scene. Upon arrival, the driver/single occupant in the sedan was found to be deceased on scene. The CMV driver was not injured.

The Trooper’s crash investigation revealed for reason(s) unknown, the driver of the sedan had entered the right shoulder of I-95 SB and struck the rear trailer of a CMV that was parked on the shoulder. As a result of this crash, the far-right travel lane of I-95 SB was closed until 9:37 a.m.
